There are three historical stagesin the urban development of many large andmedium-sized cities of Russia: prerevolutionary, Soviet and post-Soviet, withcharacteristic principles of urban planning andiconic architectural objects symbolizing certain values. Purpose: to study the peculiaritiesof the emotional perception of the Soviet, preSoviet and post-Soviet components of urbanspace by the youth of the Russian regionalcenter in the 2020s. Research methodology:reasoning in the spirit of M. McLuhan, we consider architecture as media or intermediarybetween a person and the world of meanings.The analysis of mental maps will allow you torecreate the imaginary structure of urbanspace, identify individual components of thisstructure and determine their symbolic significance (including emotional) in the eyes ofcitizens. As a result of the study of mentalmaps, the trend of devaluation of the symbolicvalue of the old merchant building area hasbeen determined. Once (in the prerevolutionary period), the prestigious districtis now poorly represented on the mental mapsof young people. In the eyes of modern youth,the historical center of the city loses its importance and ceases to fit into the image of thefuture. The symbolic significance of such objects-symbols of the Soviet urban space, as themonument to Lenin, the buildings of the regional and city administration, the Opera andBallet Theater is also falling. Modern youthmental maps of Saratov also lack Soviet industrial giants and revolutionary monuments.However, such architectural objects built inSoviet times as, for example, the Bridge andVictory Park on Sokolova Gora are still themain landmarks on the periphery of the cityDownloads
