The article considers modern trends in the internationalization of higher education, reveals the contradictions between the processes of globalization of education and the interests of states. Paradoxically, it is a fact that in the context of globalization, national interests and the efforts of states in promoting national higher education systems at the international level are actualized. The state strategies of different countries are analyzed to improve the quality, attractiveness of higher education, create favorable conditions for studying and living foreign students. The positions of Russia in the emerging space of transnational education are considered. The changes in students' motivation and the geography of student mobility are argued for reasons of expanding the possibilities for their choice, studying several foreign languages, and the policy of states to attract foreign students. The author analyzes an extensive Russian and foreign empirical base and comes to the conclusion that in the near future there will be a shift towards the attractiveness of the Asian direction of education. Сountries, which were previously suppliers of students to Western countries, are becoming recipient countries, they are receiving more and more foreign students. The competitive landscape of the international educational space is changing. Russia will compete hard not only with Western universities, but also with new Asian players.Downloads
